Marie Curie Cancer Care provides high quality nursing, totally free, to give people with terminal cancer and other illnesses the choice of dying at home, supported by their families.

Marie Curie Cancer Care has 9 hospices across England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, and two centres for palliative care research. 

Marie Curie Cancer Care also runs the world-renowned Marie Curie Research Institute, which investigates the causes and treatments of cancer.

  1. Marie Curie Cancer Care is one of the UK’s largest charities. It was established in 1948 – the same year as the NHS – and marked its 60th anniversary in 2008.
  2. Employing more than 2,700 nurses, doctors and other healthcare professionals, Marie Curie Cancer Care expects to provide care to around 27,000 terminally ill patients in the community and in its hospices this year, along with support for their families.
  3. The charity is best known for its network of Marie Curie Nurses working in the community to provide end-of-life care for patients in their own homes.
  4. Financially, around 70% of the charity’s income comes from the generous support of thousands of individuals, membership organisations and businesses, with the balance of our funds coming from the NHS.
  5. The charity also depends on an army of volunteers to support its work in both care and fundraising.
  6. The charity has four key activities: Marie Curie Nurses, Marie Curie Hospices, the Marie Curie Research Institute, and Palliative Care Research.
  7. Marie Curie Nurses now care for around 50% of all cancer patients who die at home.
  8. With nine hospices across the UK, Marie Curie Cancer Care provides the largest number of hospice beds outside the NHS.
  9. Marie Curie works with external researchers and commissions cancer research.
